Scholarship Descriptions & Requirements
ANTICIPATED SCHOLARSHIPS
Each of these scholarships require the following documents, all of which can be submitted once through your Student Profile:
(1) Community service details (listed with "Activities")
(2) Essay describing student's future plans; include career goals and detail how they plan to achieve them through continuing education and other activities. Applicant may also include how his or her activities, experience, education, and community involvement will have prepared him or her for future academic success, career, or life adventures.
(3) Letter(s) of recommendation (request online through the application, do this first!!)
(4) School transcript
BJ and Anna Bjorneby Scholarship ($500-$1000)
This scholarship is in honor of BJ and Anna Bjorneby, long-time community members and owners of Bjorneby Auto Rebuild in Des Moines.
This scholarship is designed to encourage education. Special consideration will be given to applicants with demonstrated financial need who desire a degree in a vocational field of study.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Clark & Marilyn Snure Memorial Scholarship
This scholarship is in honor of Clark & Marilyn Snure, long-time community members.
This scholarship is designed to encourage education. Special consideration will be given to applicants pursing a major or career in Education.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Des Moines Rotary Scholarship ($500 - $1,000)
Funding for this scholarship is provided by the Des Moines Rotary Club.
Transcripts are reviewed but grade point average is not a consideration for this scholarship.
Consideration is given to the extent and scope of community involvement and civic activities.
This scholarship is available to graduating senior students who live in or attend school in Des Moines or Normandy Park.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates Scholarship ($1,000)
The funding of this scholarship is provided by Des Moines Yacht Club First Mates.
This scholarship is available only to seniors graduating from Mount Rainier High School who plan to attend a post-secondary educational institution (vocational, community college, or four-year college) and is designed to recognize students who show great commitment to community service and who work to their potential academically.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Des Moines Dollars for Scholars Scholarship ($500 - $1,000)
Funding for this scholarship is provided by contributions received from business, service and professional organizations and individual donors.
Primary consideration for this scholarship is given to students with demonstrated financial need.
Applicants must have a GPA of 2.5 or better.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition only.
Geraldine Sorensen Scholarship ($1,000)
The funding for this scholarship is provided by Geraldine Sorensen and Southwest Seattle Business and Professional Women.
This scholarship is designed to encourage women to continue their education toward careers in business or professional services. Applicants must demonstrate clear career goals and critical financial need.
This scholarship is limited to female students who live in or attend school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Recology of King County Scholarship ($1,000)
The funding for this scholarship is provided by Recology CleanScapes. Recology is dedicated to building exceptional resource ecosystems that protect the environment and sustain our communities. This scholarship is designed to promote education and encourage waste reduction. Field of study is unrestricted.
Grade point average: 2.5 and above.
The applicant must additionally provide an essay describing in 250 words or less (1) what resource conservation and waste reduction means to him or her, and (2) the everyday decisions the applicant makes to conserve resources and reduce waste. Paste essay into "questions" tab when applying for scholarship.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition only.
Des Moines Chamber of Commerce / Ronald Millheisler Memorial Scholarship ($500 - $1,000)
The funding for this scholarship is provided by the Des Moines Chamber of Commerce Endowment Fund in memory of attorney Ronald Millheisler.
This scholarship is designed to encourage business education. Special consideration will be given to students who have actual work experience.
This scholarship is available to graduating senior students who live in or attend school in Des Moines or Normandy Park.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition only.
Seattle Business and Professional Women Scholarship ($1,000)
The funding for this scholarship is provided by Southwest Seattle Business and Professional Women.
This scholarship is designed to encourage women to continue their education toward careers in business or professional services. Applicants must demonstrate clear career goals and critical financial need.
This scholarship is limited to female students who live in or attend school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Steven J. Underwood Memorial Scholarship ($500 - $1000)
The funding of this scholarship is provided by employees of the City of Des Moines in memory of Officer Steven Underwood of the Des Moines Police Department.
Special consideration is given to students who indicate career goals in the law enforcement or criminal justice fields.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
ABC Grocery Scholarship ($1000)
The funding of this scholarship is provided by ABC grocery, a local City of Des Moines store located in downtown Des Moines.
This scholarship is available to anyone who lives in or attends school in Des Moines or Normandy Park and who intends to attend college during the upcoming school year.
Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees and books.
Legacy Foundation ($1000)
The Legacy Foundation will be awarding a Kaylene Moon Memorial Scholarship. This scholarship is provided by the Des Moines Legacy Foundation, a charitable non-profit organization that serves the City of Des Moines.
The scholarship is in honor of Kaylene Moon, a lifelong advocate for youth and senior citizen social programs and services to meet the diverse needs of Des Moines citizens.
The scholarship targets high school students who intend to pursue higher education. Students must exhibit a history of volunteerism and a commitment of service to others in the school or community setting. Focus areas may include involvement in youth, family, and senior citizen recreation and civic programs and services, arts and cultural activities, and human services.
The scholarship is available to Des Moines residents only, to encourage further education in vocational, community college, and four-year college within the upcoming year. Applicants may have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and must demonstrate a high standard of academic goals achievement. Scholarship funds may be used for tuition, fees, and books.
